I am nearly to the water pods when it happens. The emergency I knew was coming. I hear Kayes yell Lizzy’s name. I come within sight of the pods just in time to see Lizzy blown out into space.

If command goes into a frenzy at that, it’s nothing compared to the storm inside me. I turn down the volume on the radio channel to the command deck, and seconds later, I’m tethered to the ship right next to Myles Kayes, who has done nothing useful yet to save Lizzy’s life.

I prioritize. The first thing to do is tell Lizzy I’m here. I say her name. She hears me, she says my name back and jokes that she’s in trouble. Because she’s Lizzy Dupree, and in the face of death, Lizzy makes light of the situation and remembers to tell you she loves you.

I tell her I love her, too. I’ve been doing this for a thousand years, and it stings every single time. I’m not sure she’s ever going to understand that when I say “I love you, too,” I don’t mean, “I love you like an old, reliable friend who’s always there for you.” I mean, “I love you like my entire life revolves around yours, and there isn’t anything I wouldn’t give to make you happy and keep you safe.”

Then Kayes says he’s sorry again—because he’s a spineless jackwagon who deserves to be swept into outer space—and that sets me off.

“You should be sorry,” I tell him. “And stop acting like she’s going to die out there. She’s not.”

“The drone rovers are out of commission,” he tells me. “The engineer I talked to said they’re practically in pieces in the rover bay. She’s out of jet fuel. It will be hours before the Nova comes to a complete stop. We don’t have cables long enough to reach her. We—”

“Have you ever had to work hard for anything, you shit head?” I say. I am so annoyed. Myles Alexander Kayes is nothing but a self-righteous dick. Oh, sure, he has some kind of pathetic love story. Lizzy’s told me before. Several times. Usually, after a glass of wine. The story goes like this:

Spoiled, perfect, rich boy crushes hard on pretty, imperfect ghetto girl. Girl has a red flag, so boy decides to become immortal. But, surprise! The girl makes her own decision about what she wants for her life and stays mortal.

Oh, the betrayal! Boy can’t take it, and apparently, he doesn’t love her enough to stay with her for twenty-five years or whatever time the girl has left as a mortal. He breaks up with her and spends the rest of his immortal life telling people he can’t ever love anyone else again. His fragile heart is too shattered.

Bullshit. I don’t care how betrayed he felt when his girl didn’t become immortal. If he actually loved her, he would have sucked it up and stuck it out with her until she died. Those two or three decades would have been a tiny blip at the start of his immortal life.
